In their multi-facetedness, the space-consuming sculptures by Gerwers can only be fully experienced by the viewer when he actively walks around the multi-colored objects. Depending on the viewer’s point of view, this results in a multitude of visual impressions.

While works directly related to spaces play an interplay between perception of the sculpture and perception of the viewer in space, the artist’s wall works show us how little we can rely on also being able to recognize or even define a picture / relief in an instant. Each movement of the viewer around such an object leads inevitably and with great surprise effects to sometimes total changes in appearance.

Martin Gerwers originally comes from painting. These two untitled paintings from 2020, which are painted on wood and emerge into the room, can be read as two-dimensional unwindings of one sculpture each. All three horizontally juxtaposed surfaces can be understood as respective sides of an object on a triangular ground plan, so that one can imagine turning the flat panels into objects again and then placing three elements on top of each other.
