<i>Conflitti<\/i> in 2018 \u2013 bereits unsere zweite Einzelausstellung mit Arcangelo Sassolino (*1967 in Vicenza, wo er auch lebt und arbeitet). Wieder wirkt es so, als habe Sassolino ganz bewu\u00dft Position zu einem aktuell dominierendem Thema in unserer Welt bezogen und die Luft (\u201earia\u201c), die wir atmen und die uns, wenn sie mit den falschen Aerosoloen geschw\u00e4ngert ist, gef\u00e4hrden kann, zum Inhalt seiner Ausstellung gemacht. Und wieder ist es aber vor allem die Untersuchung der Skulptur und die M\u00f6glichkeit, eine neue Beziehung zwischen Skulptur und Rezipient*in zu schaffen, die ihn interessieren.<\/p>\n<p>Wer die Galerie betritt, sieht sich einer gelb lackierten, in ein Gehege eingez\u00e4unten Maschine gegen\u00fcber (<i>Il vuoto senza misura<\/i> [deutsch: <i>Die gewaltige Leere<\/i>]), die \u2013 dieser Einz\u00e4unung wegen \u2013 fast wie ein wildes, gef\u00e4hrliches Tier wirkt. Es ist aber nat\u00fcrlich kein Tier, sondern ein schlichter, wenngleich riesiger Ventilator (179 x 155 x 106 cm), wie er auf der ganzen Welt in Tunnels verwendet wird, um dort die schlechte Luft heraus- und gute Luft hineinzublasen. Fast jede*r wird schon bei einer Autofahrt im Sommer das summende Ger\u00e4usch geh\u00f6rt haben, das einen empf\u00e4ngt, wenn man bei ge\u00f6ffnetem Fenster in einen Tunnel f\u00e4hrt. Und wir erleben den Krach, den Motor und Wind erzeugen. Wenn die Maschine erst still steht und angeschaltet wird, erfahren wir das Crescendo des sich drehenden Motors und Propellers, die erst relativ leise einen zarten Wind erzeugen und dann immer schneller, scheinbar fast unendlich schnell drehen und st\u00fcrmen k\u00f6nnen. Alternativ erleben wir die Gewalt des drehenden Propellers und des L\u00e4rms direkt, wenn die Maschine schon auf vollen Touren l\u00e4uft.<\/p>\n<p>Neben dem Sturm, dem wir ausgesetzt sind und den wir erfahren, sehen wir den Ventilator selbst, der gelb lackiert ist, wie die Baumaschinen, mit denen die Earth Artists seit den ausgehenden 1960er Jahren ihre monumentalen Projekte schufen (darauf bezog sich Walter de Maria, als er 1968 ein in der legend\u00e4ren <i>Earth Works<\/i>-Ausstellung bei Virginia Dwan ausgestelltes, \u00fcber 6 m breites Gem\u00e4lde <i>Yellow Painting<\/i>. The <i>Color Men Choose When They Attack the Earth<\/i> betitelte, und wiederum darauf bezieht sich Sassolino mit seiner Arbeit und deren Farbe). Abgesehen von dieser Lackierung und einer weiteren minimalen, \u00e4sthetischen Ver\u00e4nderung durch eine Abdeckung, die Sassolino dem Ventilator hinzuf\u00fcgte, stehen wir einem <i>Objet trouv\u00e9<\/i> oder <i>Ready Made<\/i> gegen\u00fcber.<\/p>\n<p>Anders als bei Marcel Duchamp und anderen K\u00fcnstler*innen, die bekannterma\u00dfen auf vorgefertigte, kaum oder garnicht ver\u00e4nderte Objekte aus industrieller Fertigung zur\u00fcckgriffen, und die die Objekte durch die Ver\u00e4nderung des Kontextes in eine andere Form des Seins transformierten, geht es Sassolino um den Einsatz der Maschine, ihre Performanz und damit um die von ihr produzierte Luft, den starken Windstrom, die Physis genau dieser unsichtbaren Materie, die er f\u00fcr uns erlebbar werden l\u00e4\u00dft. Skulptur also als Erfahrung, nicht prim\u00e4r als visuell wahrgenommener Gegenstand, den wir zwar umkreisen und in seinen unterschiedlichen, k\u00f6rperlichen Formen sehen, den wir aber dennoch als etwas von uns getrenntes sehen. Sassolino f\u00fchrt also weiter was u.a. K\u00fcnstler wie Richard Serra oder Tony Smith begonnen haben: eine r\u00e4umlich-k\u00f6rperliche Erfahrung von Skulptur, die so monumental oder so bedrohend wirkt, da\u00df wir, als Rezipient*innen unsere Distanz verlieren, quasi aufgehen in der Skulptur und in ihrer Wahrnehmung.<\/p>\n<p>Sassolino dreht diese Schraube dadurch weiter, als er mit dem \u00fcber 1000 Umdrehungen pro Minute leistenden Ventilator tats\u00e4chlich ein mit dem ganzen K\u00f6rper zu erfahrendes Erlebnis erm\u00f6glicht und unseren k\u00f6rperlichen Einsatz, ja sogar Widerstand erzwingt. Der Wind, und das ist vielleicht die tagesaktuelle Seite der Medaille, macht uns nicht nur die Luft an sich bewusst, sondern auch, wie lebenswichtig sie ist, wie abh\u00e4ngig wir von ihr sind. Gerade heute, da besonders klar ist, dass ein einziger Atemzug kostbar oder, wenn man etwa die falschen Partikel oder Aerosole einatmet, gef\u00e4hrlich sein kann. Mit dem durch den Ventilator erzeugten Wind und mit Staub und Schmutz aus seinem Atelier bzw. mit Vogelfedern oder mit von Ginko-B\u00e4umen abgefallenen Bl\u00e4ttern aus dem Umfeld seines Ateliers hat Sassolino einige zweidimensionale Objekte geschaffen, die er als Filter, nicht als Gem\u00e4lde liest. <br \/>Dazu wurden vergitterte Metallrahmen vor den Ventilator gesetzt und die verschiedenen Materialien durch den Ventilator gejagt. Es sind mehrere, hintereinander gesetzte Gitter in jedem Rahmen, so da\u00df die herausgefilterten Materialien fixiert werden konnten. So sehen wir \u2013 in all-over-Strukturen komponierte \u2013 Assemblagen aus nat\u00fcrlichen und armen Materialien. Anders aber als in der italienischen <i>arte povera<\/i> ist hier nicht die Poesie des Materials entscheidend, sondern seine blo\u00dfe Existenz als etwas, das dem Wind, der titelgebenden Gewaltigen Leere, ausgesetzt ist. Again, it seems as if Sassolino has quite consciously taken a position on one of the issues dominating everything in our world at the moment by making the air (\u201earia\u201c) that we breathe and that, if impregnated with the wrong aerosols, can endanger us, the content of his exhibition. And again, however, it is above all the investigation of sculpture and the possibility of creating a new relationship between sculpture and recipient that interests him.<\/p>\n<p>On entering the gallery, one is confronted with a yellow-painted machine fenced into an enclosure (<i>Il vuoto senza misura <\/i>[English: <i>The Mighty Void<\/i>]), which \u2013 because of this fencing \u2013 almost looks like a wild, dangerous animal. But of course it is not an animal, but a simple, albeit huge fan (179 x 155 x 106 cm), like the ones used in tunnels all over the world to blow out bad air and blow in good air. Almost everyone will have heard the buzzing sound that greets you through the open windows when you enter a tunnel during a car ride in the summer. And we experience the noise made by the engine and the wind. Either, when the machine first stands still and is turned on for us, we experience the crescendo of the spinning engine and propeller, which first create a gentle wind relatively quietly and then can spin and storm faster and faster, seemingly almost infinitely fast. Or we feel the violence of the spinning propeller and noise directly when the engine is already running at full speed.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the storm we are exposed to and experience, we see the fan itself, painted yellow, like the earth moving machines the Earth Artists used to create their monumental projects since the late 1960s (this is what Walter de Maria was referring to when he titled an over 6 meter large painting exhibited in the legendary <i>Earth Works<\/i> exhibition at Virginia Dwan\u2019s in 1968 Yellow Painting. <i>The Color Men Choose When They Attack the Earth<\/i>, and again this is what Sassolino is referring to with his work and its color). Aside from this varnish and another minimal aesthetic alteration by a cover that Sassolino added to the fan, we are faced with an <i>objet trouv\u00e9<\/i> or <i>Ready Made<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Marcel Duchamp and other artists, who famously resorted to prefabricated, barely or not at all altered objects from industrial production, and who transformed the objects into another form of being by shifting their context, Sassolino is concerned with the action of the machine, its performance, and thus with the air it produces, the strong wind, the mighty physicality of precisely this invisible matter, which he forces us to endure. Sculpture, then, as an experience, not primarily as a visually perceived object that we might circle and see in its various, physical forms, but which we still see as something separate from us.<\/p>\n<p>Sassolino thus continues what artists such as Richard Serra or Tony Smith, among others, have begun: a spatial-physical experience of sculpture that seems so monumental or so threatening that we, as recipients, lose our distance, virtually become absorbed in the sculpture and its perception. Sassolino pushes the envelope even further by actually enabling an experience that is felt with the whole body by means of the fan that rotates at over 1000 revolutions per minute, forcing our physical engagement, even resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The wind, and this is perhaps the very daily side of the coin, makes us aware not only of the air itself, but also of how vital it is, how dependent we are on it. Especially today, when it is particularly clear that a single breath can be precious or, if you inhale the wrong particles or aerosols, dangerous. Deploying the wind generated by the fan as well as dust and dirt from his studio or bird feathers or leaves fallen from ginko trees around his studio, Sassolino has created a number of two-dimensional objects that he sees as filters, not paintings. This was done by placing gridded metal frames in front of the fan and blowing the various materials through it. There are several grids in each frame, placed one after the other, so that the materials filtered out could be affixed. Thus we see \u2013 composed in all-over structures \u2013 assemblages of natural and poor materials. Unlike Italian <i>arte povera<\/i>, however, it is not the poetry of the material that is crucial here, but its very existence as something exposed to the wind, the eponymous Violent Void.
